The calling of a Demand Day is a mark to remind the nation the declining status of education in the largest democracy of the world. India’s commitments towards universalisation of equitable and quality education has not been fulfilled even after six years of the enactment of the Right to Education Act which made education a fundamental right. It is also a violation of the constitution of the country.

We are at a juncture today where 8.4 crore children didn’t attend school and no count of children in difficult situations. 8.34 lakh teacher positions have not been filled. Allocation of budget on SSA has reduced from 27,758 crore to 22,000 crore. Overall GDP allocation has also reduced and is at a meagre 3.8 percent. These figures have put forward a very challenging picture before the nation. It is questioning states’s commitment which linked education with right to Life. Increase of commercialisation of school education is threatening universalisation of education more than ever before. Commercialisation is opposed to universalisation. It will leave behind the last child everywhere. And in India there is a danger of leaving behind many.

On this day we will come together and stage our demands and the formidable threats which create barriers in achieving education for all.
